The german word Verkehr (traffic) has changed its meaning in the course of time. Before the contemporary understanding of the word as Transportation of people and goods it was understood in the 18th century as Umgang mit jemandem haben (consort or mix with s.o.), so going around someone - taking the term literally -,(this circumscription of the German consort/mix with s.o. happens because of the word Um-Gang which on its own means the walk around) that is to say
to perceive him/her from all sides neglecting one's own original direction of movement voluntarily.
In MiddleHighGerman the meaning of verkehren - that is the verb verkeren - "umkehren, umwenden, verdrehen, ins Entgegengesetzte verŠndern, eine falsche Richtung geben" [Duden, German dictionary] (to turn, to twist, to change to the opposite, to give a wrong direction).
SHARED SPACE now annihilates all traffic rules and meanings and wants that each vehicle behaves equivalently to each other in the street area that is available. We want to trace this phenomenon on the 26th of Juni in 2009.
