After several days of protests the increases were withdrawn in Bremen. In Freiburg the central traffic area was blocked for serveral days.With this demonstrators as well as municipality and police were repeatedly surprised with the course of the protest activities:

• The traffic light served as assistant of blockade ("Soon it will be green" - the demonstrators called out in a choir and used the green-phase for pedestrians to block the traffic lane)
• Role reversal: when trying to clear thepolice themselves blocked the traffic with their huge presence.  
• Subject change: the subject of the protests tilts from transport fares to police operations and questions of democracy.
• The demand for establishing publicity for a public city council meeting (loudspeaker transfer onto the city hall square) renews the term of publicity

(One cannot deal with those acting criminally against the city Freiburg with kid gloves but rather  indiscrimiately - at least 70% of the communists are within the student body)

(Some several thousand citizens as protesters and spectators keep the city in tenterhooks. This is unusual because we have been made familiar with democratic rules only very little; The increases in transportation fares of the city transport companies are not reasonable for large families(...) What annoys me especially about the whole issue is the attitude of almost all citizens; in the bus and on the street they are angry - far too expansive, exorbitant -  and when the increase will be implemented then the anger truly starts. Today though they attack from behind all the pupils and students who also protest for us citizens.)

States side it was reacted in the same way to similar protests. In spite of their spontaneous character the protests had a similar course everywhere. After the first wave of protests a fixed repetition of the confrontation demonstrators/police occurred. The major of Bremen at that time, Koschnick, recognized in retrospect ãWir hatten vorher eine Šhnliche Auseinandersetzung in Kšln. (...) ich hatte mich darŸber aufgeregt, dass dort auch zuerst die Staatsgewalt eingriff und hinterher der Dialog kam, und gesagt, das wollen wir mal nicht machen. (...) Wie kann man im Dezember noch sagen, wir mŸssen einen neuen Weg suchen und meine erste Reaktion war der alte Weg? Das war der falsche.Ò ⁴ (We had a similar confrontation in Cologne. (...) I was angry about the authority interfering and the dialogue happening afterwards, and saying we don't want to do that this time (...). How can one say in December still we have to look for a new way and my first reaction was the old way? that was the wrong one).
